Pocket Fire burn scar keeps Slide Rock swimming area closed through September

Flash flooding and debris from the Pocket Fire burn scar will keep the popular swimming area at Slide Rock State Park closed through September, though the park remains open for hiking and picnicking, officials said Thursday.

The popular swimming area was first closed July 17 after heavy rain flooded Oak Creek and washed ash and debris from the burn scar into the water. Officials said ash, sediment and organic matter have affected water quality, while the risk of flash flooding remains a major public safety concern during monsoon season.

The park will remain open for hiking, picnicking and access to the historic homestead displays.

Visitors can also use the Clifftop Nature Trail.

Arizona State Parks and Trails urged visitors to check closures and weather conditions before heading out.
