Evacuation orders caused by Shaw Fire in Cochise County lifted for residents

PHOENIX — Evacuation orders caused by The Shaw Fire in southeastern Arizona were lifted on Tuesday evening, officials announced.

Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management said the “GO” and “SET” orders were lifted only for residents, noting that power had been restored to the area.

Cochise Stronghold, including the Cochise Stronghold Campground, was originally put under a “GO” evacuation order on Monday afternoon. The area west of Cochise Stronghold Road and south of Dream Catcher Way was also put on a “SET” order, which means residents should be prepared to leave.

All hiking trails in the East and West Stronghold were closed Monday, including Cochise Trail and Middlemarch Canyon Trail. It was not said when those are expected to reopen.

Containment of the fire, which ignited on private property shortly before 2 p.m. Monday, grew to 70% at 16 acres as of 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

The forestry department said that crews spent most of the day around homes in the fire area “mopping up” and securing an open line.

Around 40 people were still assigned to the fire, including a hand crew, engines and water tenders. The forestry department noted that aircrafts were still available if needed.
