Gas leak leads to evacuations at Grand Canyon National Park facility

PHOENIX — Multiple trails were evacuated at Grand Canyon National Park Saturday after gas was leaked from a facility following a fire.

Firefighters responded to a fire at a North Rim water treatment facility around 3:30 p.m., according to the National Park Service. Crews who reported the incident had been responding to the Dragon Bravo Fire located about 35 miles from the White Sage Fire. 

The Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed several structures, including a historic lodge.

Chlorine gas was leaked from the facility following the fire, authorities said.

Park officials then evacuated the firefighters from the North Rim and hikers in the inner canyon.

The North Kaibab Trail, Phantom Ranch and the South Kaibab Trail were closed due to the gas leak. They will remain closed until officials deem it safe to reopen.
