PHOENIX — A wildfire near Payson that started Sunday is now 100% contained, officials confirmed Monday afternoon.

The fire burning just north of New River caused all southbound lanes of Highway 87 to temporarily close, halting traffic yesterday.

Two hotshot crews and three engines were working the fire, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Multiple departments, including Gila County Sheriff Department, Arizona Department of Transportation and Payson Fire, have assisted with extinguishing the fire.
