Containment increases to 83% on Cody Fire, evacuations orders lightened for town north of Tucson

PHOENIX — Evacuation orders for the Cody Fire north of Tucson were updated as of Monday morning and containment grew significantly since the last daily report, authorities said.

The wildfire began around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday southeast of Oracle and has consumed 1,223 acres, with the latest incident report showing 83% containment. On Sunday, crews had the fire at 47% containment.

No growth was reported between Sunday night and Monday morning. Now, 573 personnel are actively working to put out the fire, compared to 503 on Sunday.

A community meeting in Oracle took place on Sunday afternoon.

What is the Cody Fire evacuation status?

One zone in Oracle remained in the “GO” status of the state’s emergency alert system. Another zone is still in the “SET” status, meaning residents there should be prepared to evacuate — or do so voluntarily — due to significant danger in the area.

Meanwhile, a majority of the zones have been downgraded and residents “are encouraged to return to normal daily activities with no further restrictions.”

The Pinal County website has a page dedicated to the latest Cody Fire alerts, including an evacuation zone map.

Evacuation centers were set up at Canyon Del Oro High School in Oro Valley and the Mammoth Community Center.

Some road closures have been lifted but the Cody Loop remains closed in multiple places.

In addition, a Coronado National Forest closure notice was issued for the area surrounding the wildfire, including a section of the Arizona Trail and the Santa Catalina Ranger District.

The cause of the wildfire is under investigation.

Oracle, which has a population of just over 3,000 people, is roughly 35 miles north of Tucson.

Much of the state is under Stage 2 fire restrictions due to hot, dry conditions.
