APS cutting power around Flagstaff, Grand Canyon to reduce fire risk this weekend

Arizona Public Service announced Friday it will cut power around Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon this weekend to help prevent wildfires amid high-risk weather conditions.

The outages will start as soon as 10 a.m. Saturday and impact about 8,000 customers who live in areas with elevated fire risks, APS said. The length of the outages will depend on conditions, but the power is expected to return by Sunday afternoon.

Due to severe fire risk conditions, APS is forecasting a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) beginning Saturday, June 27.

Residents in the following northern Arizona communities should plan to be without electricity temporarily this weekend:

• Doney Park
• Timberline
• Fernwood
• Mormon Lake
• Cosnino
• Sunset Crater
• Fort Valley/Baderville
• Walnut Canyon
• Valle
• Some east Flagstaff neighborhoods
• Tusayan
• Grand Canyon National Park – south and east rims

With high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity in the forecast, the National Weather Service activated Red Flag Warnings across much of the state.

How is APS informing customers about planned outages?

APS issued a warning about the possibility of shutoffs earlier this week. The utility company said it will maintain direct communications with impacted customers and post details, including estimated restoration times, to its online outage map.

The outage map also will be updated with the locations of cooling centers and free ice distribution.

Customers who live where the power could be cut should check their accounts at aps.com or call 602-371-7171 to make sure APS has their updated contact information.

Flagstaff’s Murdoch Community Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday to provide information, charging stations, refrigeration and water to impacted customers.

Grand Canyon National Park officials said they are monitoring the situation and will provide residents with ice and water at several distribution points.

APS will reimburse the price of up to 20 pounds of dry ice or 40 pounds of regular ice to customers who buy it to preserve food during an outage of more than 10 hours.

The utility company also provided the following tips about how to endure the power shutoff:

• Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to keep food and perishable items cold.
• Unplug unnecessary equipment and appliances to prevent electrical spikes and wait at least five minutes after the power returns to turn on appliances and equipment.
• Stay at least 100 feet away from downed lines and call 911 and APS to report them.
