Weekend weather: Valley forecast calls for falling temperatures, rising winds

PHOENIX – The Valley temperature pendulum will swing downward this weekend, according to the latest forecast.

Highs are expected to reach the 90s for the fifth consecutive day on Friday, but that streak will probably end the next day.

“Our temperatures are going to cool quite significantly by Sunday, where it looks like we might have highs in the middle to upper 70s, maybe lower 80s in some spots,” Alex Young of the National Weather Service in Phoenix told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Friday morning.

The cooling system has the potential to stir up winds across the area over the next few days, especially in the afternoon, with gusts of up to 30 mph.

The metro Phoenix forecast also calls for mostly sunny skies with no chance for rain.

Are Valley temperature swings normal in spring?

Highs are expected to return to the 90s by the middle of next week. Valley temperatures normally peak in the upper 80s during the last week of April.

Young said temperature fluctuations are typical for the winter and spring months.

“You’ve got your winter systems that especially impact the Pacific Northwest, and then if those systems are strong enough, they can dip down into our area, so that can result in these fluctuations … in temperatures and then windy conditions,” he said.
