Valley rings in the New Year with scattered showers, more rain expected rest of week

PHOENIX — The Valley not only rang in the New Year with fireworks, but also some scattered showers overnight into Thursday morning.

After a rainy morning, metro Phoenix dried out some, with greater chances of precipitation coming soon.

According to the Maricopa County Interactive Rainfall Data Map, Arizona Biltmore just north of Phoenix received 0.08 inches, Scottsdale’s Orange Tree Golf Resort 0.12 inches and all parts of greater Mesa listed saw 0.04 inches from Wednesday night to Thursday around 8:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which National Weather Service uses for its official readings, was sprinkled with 0.03 inches of rain.

As far as temperature, metro Phoenix saw a high of 66 degrees, which is exactly on par for this day on the calendar. However, it is expected to warm up into the weekend when it will be in the lower 70s.

Are more showers expected to hit the Valley in coming days?

NWS Meteorologist Chris Kuhlman told KTAR News that Thursday’s rain activity was the first of two, possibly three, storms that are expected to move through metro Phoenix in the coming days.

“There’s a weak little system that might bring some shower activity Sunday night into Monday,” Kuhlman said. “But again, that’s not going to amount to a whole lot of rainfall, just enough to maybe get street sweat and that kind of thing.”

The meteorologist noted that the system that’s expected to move through the Valley late Tuesday into Wednesday will have a more substantial chance for rainfall. He added that it could shower metro Phoenix with anywhere from a quarter to half an inch of rain.
