Valley to dry out before possible return of wet weather to Phoenix forecast

PHOENIX — The Valley is expected to dry out late Sunday morning before a possibility of wet weather returns to the Phoenix forecast the rest of the week.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) for Phoenix, the chance of rain in metro Phoenix was low after 9 a.m. due to the rain moving east toward the Globe and San Carlos area where the possibility of showers was expected until 1 p.m.

A chance of showers and thunderstorms were forecasted for every day during the week up until Saturday when it is expected to be mostly sunny with a high of 69 degrees.

“It looks like we’re going to be dealing with actually a couple systems that are going to be moving through,” NWS Phoenix Meteorologist Ryan Worley told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Sunday morning. “The system moving through for the early part of the week, that could bring us some rain chances as early as Monday night into early Tuesday morning, but it looks like our best chances rain chances will be beginning on Tuesday.”

Worley added that a second system is expected to head through the Valley after the first one and increase rain chances even more.

“What we’re looking at right now, it looks like this system might actually be a little bit better for us in terms of rainfall totals,” Worley said. “But things are subject to change over the next couple of days.”

Worley noted that the current forecast shows some areas of the Valley possibly receiving anywhere from half to three-quarters of an inch of rain.

How much rain has the Valley received during this bout of wet weather?

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which NWS uses for the city’s official rainfall readings, had not received a measurable amount of rain on Sunday morning.

“Not everywhere saw rain, there were plenty of places that actually remained dry for the most part,” Worley said.

In fact, Maricopa County’s Interactive Rainfall Data Map showed that much of the East Valley — including Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert and Chandler — remained fairly dry as weather moved through the Valley over the past 24 hours.

The only East Valley city that received measurable rainfall was Apache Junction with 0.04 inches of rain. Downtown Phoenix got the same amount of rain.

On the other hand, cities in the West Valley saw some showers. Tolleson, Glendale, Goodyear, Litchfield Park and Surprise all received 0.08 inches of rain.

In addition, most areas in north Phoenix were showered with anywhere from 0.04 to 0.16 inches of rain.

Further north, the areas around Anthem saw even more rain with 0.24 to 0.31 inches.
