Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Maricopa County

PHOENIX — The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Maricopa County on Thursday that will last until 8:15 p.m.

Wind gusts of up to 60 mph are expected with the possibility of quarter-sized hail in some areas, NWS said.

Rain had already hit parts of Peoria and Glendale prior to 8 p.m., with those cities getting around 0.04 inches. The storm originally developed just south of Buckeye.

Storms were predicted to develop as early as Wednesday night this week, with some parts of the East Valley receiving rainfall. However, NWS meteorologist Mark O’Malley told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Wednesday that there were higher chances for precipitation on Thursday and Friday.

It has been one of the driest monsoon seasons in recent Phoenix history, with the area only receiving around 0.68 inches with only about two weeks remaining.
