Thunderstorms impact parts of the Valley with heavy rain and power outages

PHOENIX — Thunderstorm activity affected multiple parts of the Valley on Thursday evening, bringing heavy rain and power outages to Maricopa County.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Phoenix initially posted regarding “strong storms” developing to the northeast of Phoenix in the foothills around 5 p.m.

The storm moved into Mesa during the 6 p.m. hour and swept westward, making its way into metro Phoenix.

NWS Phoenix then issued a severe thunderstorm warning around 6:20 p.m. and warned that the storms could possibly produce winds at speeds as high as 60 mph.

There were multiple special weather statements and thunderstorm warnings issued for parts of the Valley throughout the evening, including in Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Tempe, Phoenix, Glendale and Peoria.

In addition, the weather authority issued dust storm warnings for the I-10 near Casa Grande, the US-60 near Phoenix and Mesa and parts of the I-8 near Casa Grande and Stanfield.

There was also a dust storm that moved through the West Valley later in the night.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which NWS uses for the city’s official readings, saw its first amount of measurable rainfall since July 2 with 0.04 inches of rain.

According to Maricopa County’s interactive data map for rainfall, central Phoenix saw the most rainfall with 0.59 inches of rain.

Meanwhile, part of Tempe received 0.16 inches of rain and Scottsdale was just under that with 0.12 inches of rain.

Thunderstorms leave thousands without power

With the heavy rain and wind that swept through parts of the Valley, there were also more than 10,000 Arizonans left without power as of 10 p.m.

APS had three outages that affected more than 1,000 people each in metro Phoenix, those were expected to be resolved between 12 a.m. and 1:30 a.m.

There was also an outage in Sun City West that left almost 1,300 customers without power and was estimated to be restored at 1:15 a.m.

Meanwhile, SRP, had six outages that affected more than 1,000 customers each in central Phoenix, south Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa.

Some of those outages were expected to be resolved in as quickly as 15 minutes while others were expected to take as long as three hours.
