More than 40,000 people in Phoenix area lose power as thunderstorms wreak havoc

PHOENIX — More than 40,000 Arizonans around the Valley lost power on Monday night as dust, rain and thunder made its way through the Phoenix metro area.

Both the Salt River Project (SRP) and the Arizona Public Service (APS) numerous outages that affected over 1,000 customers each as of 6:20 p.m.

SRP said that storm activity was affecting the electric system in the area.

Meanwhile, APS listed on its outages that severe weather in the area had damaged equipment.

What parts of the Valley were left without power?

SRP’s live outage map showed 20 outages affecting more than 1,000 customers each spread throughout Peoria, Tolleson, Glendale, Scottsdale, Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa and Chandler as of 6:45 p.m.

Nine of those outages were in Phoenix and four of them were in Mesa.

At that time, APS’ live outage map showed that there were four outages affecting more than 1,000 customers each, but it also had seven separate outages that were leaving hundreds of residents without power.

As of 10 p.m., APS had resolved all of the outages that were affecting more than 1,000 people but had four that were still affecting hundreds of people each. Most of the remaining outages were expected to be resolved by 1:30 a.m., however, there was one that listed it wouldn’t be resolved until 3 a.m.

SRP had four outages that were affecting more than 1,000 customers remaining. Those SRP outages were expected to be resolved in less than an hour.

As 6 a.m. Tuesday, fewer than 200 APS and SRP customers were without power.
