Phoenix area could get stronger storms later in day after early scattered showers

PHOENIX – Scattered showers fell on the outskirts of metro Phoenix early Wednesday, and there’s a chance for stronger storms later in the day.

The total was mostly under 0.1 inches in the areas that received morning rainfall. The activity was limited mainly to the north, west and south.

There’s a better chance for widespread rainfall Wednesday night into Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Stronger storms could result in warnings

“There is going to be a few thunderstorms interspersed with this activity,” Ted Whittock, NWS meteorologist, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Wednesday morning. “So, if there are any stronger storms, we will have things like severe thunderstorm warnings or maybe a flood advisory or a flash flood warning.”

In addition, the monsoon storm activity is expected to keep temperatures about 5 degrees below normal in the coming days.

“We’re forecasting 101 today for Phoenix and 102 tomorrow before things start to warm back up for the weekend,” Whittock said.
