Thunderstorms disrupt travel at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

Thunderstorms disrupted travel at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Thursday morning.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop for flights from airports across the Southwestern U.S. to Phoenix at 6:47 a.m.

The ground stop was scheduled to expire at 8 a.m., but the FAA changed it to a departure delay notice for flights out of Phoenix at 7:24 a.m. At the time, Sky Harbor departures were delayed by an average of 15 minutes. The average delay increased to 30 minutes by 7:45 a.m.

As of 10:15 a.m., the delay notice had been removed from the FAA website, but dozens for flights were behind schedule by then. Flight-tracking website FlightAware showed delays for more than 150 flights into or out of Sky Harbor, and the Phoenix airport’s website listed more than 60 delays.

More storms are possible across central and southern Arizona throughout the day, with the best chances in the midafternoon and evening.
