Unusually rainy June trend continues with overnight showers across Valley

PHOENIX – Parts of the Valley woke up to wet roadways Wednesday after storms developed overnight, continuing an unusually rainy trend for June.

The early-morning system produced widespread showers, including 0.14 inches at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service (NWS) uses for the city’s official readings.

That was just short of the record for June 4 of 0.16 inches from 1932.

“There could be a few additional showers through the rest of the morning, but most of it will be in the West Valley and areas to the north of Phoenix,” NWS meteorologist Chris Kuhlman told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

Phoenix rain is historically rare in June, but not this year

The Valley has now received measurable precipitation on three out of the last four days during a time of year when it rarely rains.

In fact, June is historically the driest month of the year in Phoenix with an average of just 0.2 inches of rainfall.

However, it’s already the city’s second-wettest month of 2025 with 0.42 inches in just four days. March, with 0.84 inches, is the wettest month of this year so far.

Kuhlman said Wednesday’s storm was separate from the system that dropped 0.24 inches at Sky Harbor on Sunday, breaking a daily record that stood since 1914.

“But it’s using the leftover subtropical moisture that was here a couple days ago,” he said. “So, it’s another storm moving through and it’s mostly going to be moved out of our area by later this afternoon.”

Triple-digit temperatures are returning soon

The Phoenix weather forecast calls for high temperatures in the upper 90s on Wednesday, a few degrees below normal.

But the Valley is expected to dry out and warm up over the rest of the week and into the weekend.

“We’ll see temperatures above 100 degrees starting Thursday and maybe even approaching 110 degrees by Sunday,” Kuhlman said.
