Phoenix breaks 15-year-old daily heat record as extreme heat warning extended

Phoenix broke a 15-year-old daily heat record on Saturday following an extreme heat warning for the area being extended through next week.

The temperature at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service uses for the city’s official readings, hit 115 degrees at 3:05 p.m. and 4:33 p.m.

The previous temperature record for Aug. 22 was 113 degrees and was set in 2011.

The record-setting temperature comes as an extreme heat warning for Phoenix was extended on Friday through Aug. 28.

Meteorologist Mark O’Malley told KTAR News 92.3 FM highs for next week will be between 110 and 115 degrees. He added that the Valley isn’t expected to see any rain over the next week after monsoon storms hit the area earlier this week.

Extreme heat warnings trigger daytime closures of hiking trails at Camelback Mountain, Piestewa Peak and South Mountain in Phoenix.

Health experts urge precautions during times of extreme heat, such as keeping hydrated, wearing light clothing and remaining indoors with air conditioning during the hottest times of the day.

The Maricopa County Heat Relief Network offers free, cool spaces and other resources to people who need relief from the heat from May to September.

Additionally, the Salvation Army opens 10 heat relief stations across the Valley during extreme heat warnings.
