After night of isolated storms, Phoenix forecast calls for more showers in coming days

PHOENIX – More rain is in the metro Phoenix forecast after isolated storms popped up Wednesday night, but don’t expect widespread monsoon action anytime soon.

“We’re looking at modest rainfall chances over the next couple of days,” Mark O’Malley of the National Weather Service (NWS) in Phoenix told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Thursday morning.

O’Malley said there’s a 30% chance for measurable rain Thursday night into Friday morning.

“And then slightly better chances on Friday afternoon and evening, with up to a 50% chance of a shower or thunderstorm,” he said.

However, much like Wednesday night, the activity won’t blanket the Valley.

“A lot of areas probably will see nothing out of this, but a few lucky ones will see some nice, generous rainfall,” O’Malley said.

How dry has it been this monsoon season?

Wednesday night’s thunderstorms were limited, for the most part, to parts of north, central and south Phoenix.

However, the rain steered clear of Sky Harbor International Airport, which the NWS uses for the city’s official readings.

The airport hasn’t seen measurable rain since 0.16 inches fell on July 2. That also was Phoenix’s only official precipitation since the official start of the monsoon season on June 15.

“We’ve been drier than average so far this monsoon, but we still have over a month to go,” O’Malley said. “So, there’s still time to make up some of that deficit.”

What else is in the metro Phoenix forecast?

However, don’t expect the monsoon pace to pick up in the near future.

“Rainfall chances really decrease by Saturday, and it looks fairly dry for at least the first part of next week,” O’Malley said.

Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to remain near normal for this time of year, with forecast highs of 103 to 108 degrees through early next week.
