Phoenix breaks daily heat record that was originally set in 1979

PHOENIX — Phoenix scorched its way into the record books on Monday.

Monday marked the hottest day in Phoenix ever recorded on June 30 as temperatures hit a blistering 116 degrees at Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service uses for the city’s official readings.

The previous record was 115 degrees, originally set in set in 1979 and matched 2013.

The mercury reached 116 degrees around 3 p.m.

New record set for hottest day in Phoenix on June 30

While a heat record was set on June 30, it was not the hottest day of the year so far.

June 19 has been Phoenix’s hottest day of 2025.

On that day, two weeks ago, the mercury at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport hit 117 degrees.

Phoenix extreme heat news

The heat record took place amid a wave of extreme heat across metro Phoenix.

NWS activated an extreme heat warning for the Valley on Sunday. These warnings alert Phoenicians that dangerous heat is either actively settling upon the area or is imminent.

Due to the conditions, various Phoenix hiking trails are restricted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on extreme heat warning days.

The extreme heat warning is set to expire Tuesday evening.
