Phoenix breaks heat record that had stood for over 100 years on Monday

On the first day of Christmas week, Phoenix broke a daily heat record that had stood for over 100 years.

PHOENIX — A daily heat record that has stood for over a century was broken on Monday, the second day in a row Phoenix has seen record-breaking heat.

The temperature hit 80 degrees at 1:59 p.m. at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, the National Weather Service (NWS) site used for the city’s official readings, breaking the previous record of 79 degrees set in 1917.

The unofficial high temperature peaked at 83 degrees around 3:30 p.m. after a forecast high of 82.

This is now the second straight day that a new record high was set. The mercury topped out at 81 degrees at Sky Harbor on Sunday. That broke the record for that date of 79 degrees, which was set in 2024.

This would also be the second week in a row that the Valley would start the workweek with record-breaking heat.

High temperatures for this time of year are generally in the mid-60s, according to the NWS.
