PHOENIX — Thunderstorms caused widespread groundings and delays to flights headed for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Thursday afternoon.

An advisory from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) cited weather concerns and low ceilings as the cause of flights headed to the Phoenix airport being delayed by an average of 29 minutes.

In aviation, the term “low ceilings” refers to the height of a cloud base above the ground, which can create hazardous conditions by reducing visibility. Put simply, fog and storms can make it harder for pilots to see obstacles.

These warnings were issued as the latest metro Phoenix forecast called for the area’s most extreme winter weather of the season, with potential thunderstorms, hail, gusty winds and plummeting temperatures predicted to assail the Valley.

However, by 7 p.m., the delays were no longer listed on the FAA’s website.
