4 people rescued from floods in Wickenburg as thunderstorms bring rain, hail, storms to the Valley

PHOENIX — A second round of storms on Tuesday triggered a wave of safety warnings across the Valley.

The National Weather Service (NWS) advised residents to be aware of a flash flood warning throughout Maricopa County.

Wickenburg and Morristown were also under a flash flood warning. In fact, floods in Wickenburg were so bad that rescues were required in two separate incidents.

Three people became stranded after a van drove into a flooding wash and started to float before it became lodged on debris, according to Wickenburg officials. A rescue helicopter from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office safely removed them, bringing them to a hospital for evaluation.

The second incident involved a driver, a dog and a pickup truck. Authorities rescued the driver, who was also brought to a hospital to be evaluated.

NWS also issued severe thunderstorm warnings for Glendale, Peoria and Surprise. Residents can expect winds of up to 60 mph as well as quarter-sized hail.

Hail was seen falling from skies in Tempe and Glendale during the afternoon.

A first wave of storms arrived early Tuesday. The initial activity subsided by 9 a.m., but not before precipitation had been detected at weather stations across most of the Phoenix area. Western Maricopa County was hit hardest.

The current storm system is expected to produce on-and-off rain across the Valley through Wednesday, with a chance for rain into Thursday morning.

While local meteorologists don’t expect showers on Friday, they said there’s a 20-30% chance for rain on Saturday and Sunday.
