US 89A reopens in both directions in northern Arizona after 2 massive wildfires caused closures

PHOENIX — Two wildfires burning through northern Arizona since early July prompted two weeks of traffic closures, which were lifted Thursday, officials said.

US 89A is now open, though crews remain active in the area to ensure safety, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

Drivers are urged to follow posted signs and instructions.

Southbound SR 67 remains closed south of Jacob Lake.

US 89A reopens after wildfire closure

The White Sage Fire, which started July 9, has burned through over 58,980 acres, according to the latest incident report.

Meanwhile, the smaller but destructive Dragon Bravo Fire has burned over 16,765 acres since starting July 4.

It also destroyed over 70 structures on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, including the historic Grand Canyon Lodge.

Arizona’s governor and members of the state’s congressional delegation are calling for an investigation into how the Dragon Bravo Fire was handled after the lodge and other historic buildings were destroyed.
