US 60 reopens after fatal early-morning crash in East Valley

PHOENIX – One person was killed in a single-vehicle crash that shut down US 60 in Mesa for several hours on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 3 a.m. near the Sossaman Road exit, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The vehicle swerved across the gore point for an unknown reason before the driver overcorrected to the left, causing the vehicle to roll down the off-ramp embankment.

The driver, who was alone in the vehicle, died after being taken to a hospital, DPS said.

US 60, which is also known as the Superstition Freeway, was closed Superstition Springs Boulevard after the crash, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The roadway reopened just before 7 a.m., ADOT said.

The westbound lanes were not impacted.
