Blasting work will create long detours on US 60 east of metro Phoenix this week

PHOENIX – A stretch of US 60 east of metro Phoenix will be closed during the daytime three times this week for rock blasting operations, creating lengthy detours.

The work is part of a bridge replacement project between Superior and Miami, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

US 60 will be closed in both directions between Superior and Miami (MP 227-243) from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, Wednesday, May 21, and Thursday, May 22.

US 60 will be closed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday in both directions between mileposts 227 and 243.

In addition, the highway will be restricted to local traffic between Miami and Magma Mine Road (mileposts 231-243).

Superior is about 65 miles east of downtown Phoenix and 17 miles west of Miami.

How can US 60 drivers detour around daytime closures?

The detour will add around 75 miles, or about one hour of driving, to the trip, so motorists should consider changing their travel schedule to avoid the area during the closure.

Eastbound US 60 traffic will have to go southeast on State Route 177 through Winkelman and then north on SR 77 to reach points beyond the closure.

The westbound detour uses the same roadways in the opposite directions.
