US 60 bridge replacement project causing major detour east of Phoenix area this week

A bridge replacement project is causing significant disruptions on US 60 east of the Phoenix area this month.

US 60 is closing in both directions between Superior and Miami (mileposts 227-243) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Local traffic will be permitted between mileposts 231 and 243.

The same full closure is tentatively scheduled to repeat June 9-11.

US 60 detour adds an hour to trip between Superior and Miami

Daytime travelers should consider adjusting their plans because the detour, which includes steep 10% grades, adds approximately an hour to a drive that normally takes about 20 minutes, ADOT said.

The Pinal County town of Superior and the Gila County town of Miami are 17 miles apart. But with the highway between the towns closed, the trek requires a reroute totaling about 75 miles through Winkelman via State Routes 177 and 77.

The $44.7 million US 60 bridge replacement project reached the halfway point in April. Crews are building new bridges to replace aging structures over Queen Creek and Waterfall Canyon, a little over an hour east of Phoenix.
