Crane pulls trailer filled with cars off Phoenix freeway guard rail after crash

PHOENIX – A crane was brought onto a Phoenix freeway Thursday to secure a trailer filled with cars that was dangling over a guard rail.

The car hauler went off the roadway around 10 a.m. after a crash on southbound Interstate 17 near Seventh Avenue, south of downtown, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Witnesses said the trailer-truck crossed all lanes of traffic before hitting a pickup, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The pickup was “almost flattened,” DPS spokesman Bart Graves told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

The pickup driver, who was ejected from the vehicle, and a passenger were hospitalized.

“The driver has very serious injuries, but I’m told they are non-life threatening,” Graves said.

Traffic moved slowly as multiple lanes were blocked while the crane was on the freeway.

However, all lanes were reopened by 3:15 p.m., according to ADOT.
