PHOENIX – With Arizona State University homecoming and the final Ironman Arizona triathlon on tap, drivers should watch out for widespread road closures in Tempe this weekend.
ASU is hosting a block party, parade and football game on Saturday as part of its homecoming festivities.
On Sunday, the Ironman Arizona race will be run in and around Tempe for the last time.
The 140.6-mile swimming, biking and running race is being discontinued after 21 years due to growth in the area and extensive construction and development along the course.
What are the Tempe street closures for ASU homecoming?
The following street closures are scheduled for homecoming activities:
- University Drive in both directions between College Avenue and Veterans Way, 7 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Saturday.
- Tenth Street in both directions east of Mill Avenue, 7 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Saturday.
- Myrtle Avenue in both directions south of University Drive, 7 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Saturday.
- McAllister Avenue in both directions between Apache Boulevard and University Drive, 10 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Saturday.
- University Drive in both directions between Mill Avenue and Rural Road, 10 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Saturday.
- Myrtle, Forest, College, McAllister avenues and Veterans Way in both directions at University Drive, 10 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Saturday.
- Lemon Street in both directions at McAllister Avenue, 10 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Saturday.
- Veterans Way in both directions between Sixth Street and College Avenue, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
- Westbound Rio Salado Parkway at McClintock Drive, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
- Eastbound Rio Salado Parkway between Ash and Mill avenues, 11 a.m. Saturday until one hour after the football game ends.
- Tenth Street in both directions at Mill Avenue (local traffic permitted), 11 a.m. Saturday until one hour after the football game ends.
- Eastbound University Drive traffic will be required to turn southbound onto Mill Avenue, 11 a.m. Saturday until one hour after the football game ends.
- Westbound University Drive traffic will be restricted from making right turns onto northbound Mill Avenue, 11 a.m. Saturday until one hour after the football game ends.
- Southbound Mill Avenue traffic will be restricted from turning left onto eastbound University Drive, 11 a.m. Saturday until one hour after the football game ends.
- Southbound Scottsdale Road/Rural Road between Curry Road and Rio Salado Parkway, Saturday from the start of the third quarter until one hour after the game ends.
- Eastbound Gilbert Drive between Scottsdale Road and College Avenue, Saturday from the start of the third quarter until one hour after the game ends.
- Westbound Rio Salado Parkway between Karsten Golf Course and McClintock Drive, Saturday from the start of the third quarter until one hour after the game ends.
- Westbound University Drive between Rural Road and McClintock Drive, Saturday from the start of the third quarter until one hour after the game ends.
- Northbound Rural Road between Rio Salado Parkway and University Drive, Saturday from the start of the third quarter until one hour after the game ends.
- Fifth, Sixth and Seventh streets in both directions between Forest and College avenues, Saturday from the start of the third quarter until one hour after the game ends.
- College Avenue in both directions between Sixth Street and Veterans Way/Fifth Street, Saturday from the start of the third quarter until one hour after the game ends.
- McAllister Drive in both directions between University Drive and Terrace Road, Saturday from the start of the third quarter until one hour after the game ends.
- Westbound and eastbound SR202 off-ramps onto Scottsdale Road, Saturday from the start of the third quarter until one hour after the game ends.
What are the Tempe street closures for Ironman Arizona?
Meanwhile, Rio Salado Parkway will be closed in both directions between Ash and Mill avenues from 4 a.m. Friday until around noon Monday for the Ironman triathlon.
In addition, the following roads will be closed Sunday from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Northbound Ash Avenue between the US Airways garage just north of Third Street and Rio Salado Parkway.
- Eastbound Rio Salado Parkway between Hardy and McClintock drives.
- Eastbound Rio Salado Parkway will be reduced to one lane between McClintock Drive and Alma School Road, with no left terms permitted, while all northbound traffic from intersecting streets and driveways will be required to turn right (east) at Rio Salado.
- Westbound Rio Salado Parkway will be restricted to one lane between Alma School Road and Mill Avenue. All westbound traffic along that stretch will be required to turn right (north) at Rural Road, McClintock Drive and Mill Avenue due to closures at those intersections.
- Westbound Rio Salado Parkway between Mill Avenue and Priest Drive.
- Southbound Mill Avenue will be restricted to one lane between Rolling Hills Golf Course and Washington Street/Curry Road, and all vehicles will be required to turn right onto Washington Street.
- Southbound Mill Avenue between Washington Street/Curry Road and Third Street.
- Northbound Mill Avenue at Third Street.
- Southbound Scottsdale Road at the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway, with only local access provided to area businesses and residents south of the freeway.
- Northbound Rural Road at Sixth Street.
- Northbound Hardy Drive between First Street and Rio Salado Parkway, with limited access to the Tempe Center for the Arts.
- Westbound First Street at Hardy Drive, with local access provided.
- McClintock Drive in both directions at Rio Salado Parkway, with all southbound traffic required to turn right.
- All traffic exiting the eastbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway at Scottsdale Road will be required to turn north, with local access provided to businesses and residents south of the freeway.
