Stretch of State Route 88 east of Valley closing for paving project for 4 days

PHOENIX — An 11-mile stretch of State Route 88 (Apache Trail) near Roosevelt Dam will be closed Monday through Thursday morning for scheduled paving work.

The section of SR 88 from the Apache Lake entrance near milepost 229 to just west of the Theodore Roosevelt Dam Overlook near milepost 241 will not be accessible for 72 hours starting at 7 a.m. Monday, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

Theodore Roosevelt Dam Overlook will be accessible via SR 188 during the closure.

This is the last of three recent midweek closure periods.

State Route 88 project background

Work on the $18 million SR 88 paving project began at the end of 2022. It is being spearheaded by ADOT, the U.S. Forest Service and the Federal Highway Administration.

Because of severe monsoon damage that occurred in 2019, the project was introduced and received funding via the Arizona Federal Lands Access Program.

Other project aims include improving sight lines at five locations, limiting repair work needed after severe weather events and reducing gravel pollution in Maricopa County.
