Pat’s Run, other activities taking over Tempe streets this weekend

PHOENIX – Motorists will have to share Tempe’s streets with Pat’s Run participants, bicycle riders and marketgoers this weekend.
Pat’s Run returns on Saturday, with a 4.2-mile course along roadways around the Tempe Town Lake area. The annual tradition honors former Arizona State University and Arizona Cardinals star Pat Tillman, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2004 after leaving the NFL to join the Army.
On Sunday, Tempe will host an Open Streets bike parade on Rio Salado Parkway and its last Second Sundays on Mill market until the fall.
To make room for all those activities, multiple streets will be closed this weekend. To start, Packard Drive will be closed in both directions between Sixth Street and Rio Salado Parkway from 4 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday.
What Tempe roadways will be closed for Pat’s Run?
The following closures will also be in effect for Pat’s Run on Saturday from 5 to 10:30 a.m.:
- Sixth Street in both directions between Rural Road and Veterans Way.
- Alpha Drive in both directions between University Drive and Sixth Street.
- Rio Salado Parkway in both directions between Rural Road and Ash Avenue.
- Northbound Mill Avenue between Third Street and Washington Street/Curry Road.
- Curry Road in both directions between Mill and College avenues.
- Lakeview Drive in both directions at Washington Street.
- Southbound College Avenue between Curry Road and Gilbert Drive.
- Eastbound Gilbert Drive between College Avenue and Scottsdale Road.
- Southbound Scottsdale/Rural Road between Curry Road and University Drive.
- Northbound Scottsdale/Rural Road between University Drive and Curry Road.
- Westbound Rio Salado Parkway at McClintock Drive.
- Eastbound Loop 202 off-ramp at Scottsdale Road.
- Westbound Loop 202 on-ramp at Scottsdale Road.
- Westbound Loop 202 off-ramp at Scottsdale Road will be restricted to northbound traffic only.
More Tempe street restrictions this weekend
With more activities throughout the weekend, Mill Avenue will be closed in both directions between University Drive and Seventh Street from 6 a.m. Sunday to noon Monday.
Furthermore, the following closures are scheduled for Sunday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.:
- Mill Avenue in both directions between University Drive and Rio Salado Parkway.
- Fifth Street in both directions between Maple and Myrtle avenues.
- Sixth Street in both directions from Maple to Myrtle avenues.
- Seventh Street in both directions from Mill Avenue to Maple Avenue/Tower Drive. (Only local traffic will be allowed west of Myrtle Avenue.)
- Rio Salado Parkway from Hardy Drive to Ash Avenue.
Visitors to Tempe’s downtown area are encouraged to use public transportation this weekend, although streetcar and bus routes will be altered for the events.
