No Valley freeway closures scheduled, but weather to cause slowdowns

PHOENIX — While there are no freeway closures scheduled for the long holiday weekend, authorities said travelers still need to watch out for slowdowns caused by weather.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said drivers should slow down on wet roads, follow vehicles at a safe distance and avoid driving through standing water.

A flash flood watch was in effect for the Phoenix area until Friday at 5 p.m.

ADOT said it’s also important to check your car for flaws, including the condition of its windshield wipers.

Anyone heading up north will face more than just rain.

Flagstaff could be hit with as much as two feet of snow through Friday, while Forest Lakes could get three feet. Snow on the San Francisco Peaks could top 40 inches.

Forecasters have warned of “difficult to impossible travel conditions” in northern Arizona at the busiest travel time of the year.

The National Weather Service said travel in the high country is not recommended Friday morning, with conditions still being considered dangerous in the afternoon.
