Luke Days air show brings road closures to Glendale this weekend

PHOENIX — Major road closures will be in effect around Luke Air Force Base in Glendale this weekend during the Luke Days air show.

The closures will run from approximately 5 a.m. Saturday through 6 p.m. Sunday.

Which roads are closed?

Glendale Avenue between Dysart and Litchfield roads will be limited to local traffic only, with complete closure beginning west of the intersection at Glendale and 137th avenues.

Litchfield Road between Camelback Road and Northern Avenue also will be restricted to local traffic.

Complete closures will begin at the North Gate intersection from the north and north of the South Gate intersection from the south.

City officials are encouraging Luke Days attendees to plan alternate routes and parking areas in advance to reduce traffic congestion.

Where do I park if not at the base?

If you are headed to Luke Days, don’t put the Air Force Base into your GPS. Instead, officials said to follow directions to designated parking lots to reduce traffic congestion.

Parking lots open at 8 a.m. with flying performances scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.

Shuttle buses will run from the Desert Diamond lot and Dysart Road lot to the event entrance. Paid VIP and ADA parking is accessible via Litchfield Road from Northern Parkway.

Pedestrian parking on Litchfield Road, as well as rideshare drop-off locations, are also available.

What is flying over Luke AFB ?

The annual air show runs this weekend on March 21-22. The free event features performances by the U.S. Blue Angels, tentatively scheduled for 12:10 p.m., and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m.

Other aerial acts include the U.S. Air Force F-35A Demonstration Team, the Tora! Tora! Tora! Pearl Harbor Re-enactment, the U.S. Marine Corps F-35B Demonstration and the Shockwave Jet Truck.

Ground activities include static aircraft exhibits, a U.S. Air Force career expo, a K9 demonstration and an F-35 weapons load demonstration.
