2 killed in fiery rollover crash on Loop 202 at Loop 101 in Tempe

Two people were killed Sunday after a fiery rollover crash on the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway at the Loop 101 interchange in Tempe, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said Monday.

The crash occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes. A vehicle merging into the high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane rear-ended a second vehicle that was stopped or moving at a slow speed in the lane, said investigators.

The impact sent the second vehicle into the median wall, where it rolled onto its roof and caught fire. Both occupants of that vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.

The blaze originally blocked the HOV and westbound lanes near McClintock Drive before the area was fully shut down, the Arizona Department of Transportation said around 6 p.m. on X.

Dark smoke also affected vision on eastbound Loop 202.

The at-fault driver was not identified. DPS said the notification process for the victims is ongoing.

The westbound freeway was closed for hours before it reopened about 10 p.m.
