Loop 101 Pima Freeway opens 2nd new lane in Scottsdale improvement project

PHOENIX – Drivers in both directions of the Loop 101 Pima Freeway now have more space as a two-year-long improvement project in Scottsdale nears completion.

A new southbound lane between Princess Drive and Shea Boulevard opened early Monday after crews completed pavement markings and other work during a weekend closure.

A new northbound lane over the same 4.5-mile segment debuted a week earlier.

Loop 101 now has four general purpose lanes and a high-occupancy vehicle lane in each direction over a busy stretch that includes exits near Westworld of Scottsdale, the Scottsdale Airport and the TPC Scottsdale golf course, which is home of the WM Phoenix Open.

What to know about Loop 101 Pima Freeway widening project

Work on the $108 million widening project began in January 2024 and is on target to be completed on schedule in early 2026, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

In addition to the new lanes, the project includes the following improvements:

• Signal and turn-lane enhancements at the Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard interchange.
• Turn-lane additions at Shea Boulevard, Raintree Drive and Princess Drive/Pima Road.
• New signs, traffic signals and lighting.

The Loop 101 Pima Freeway improvement project was funded through Proposition 400, a half-cent transportation sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004. It was scheduled under the Regional Transportation Plan, which is managed by the Maricopa Association of Governments.
