Northwest Valley freeway exit closed for 2 months as part of widening project

PHOENIX – A northwest Valley freeway ramp is closed for the next two months as part of a major widening project.

The closure of the eastbound Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway off-ramp at 27th Avenue started Monday night, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

As a detour, eastbound Loop 101 traffic can exit at 35th Avenue and take the freeway frontage road or Union Hills Drive to reach 27th Avenue.

The 27th Avenue exit is expected to reopen in late September.

Details of Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway widening project

Work on the $140 million Loop 101 widening project started in September 2024 and is scheduled for completion in spring 2027.

The main objective is to add a lane in each direction over the 6 miles between Interstate 17 in Phoenix and 75th Avenue in Glendale.

In addition, crews will expand several bridges along the stretch, upgrade freeway lighting, modify the drainage system and resurface pavement.

The project is funded through the countywide Prop 400 half-cent transportation sales tax.
