Buckle up, drivers. A new phase of the Interstate 10 widening project between Phoenix and Casa Grande is underway.

Crews began construction on an 11-mile stretch in both directions between Loop 202 (Santan/South Mountain freeways) and the Gila River, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.

The work marks the third of four segments in the 26-mile I-10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor Project, which aims to ease congestion and shorten travel times.

What improvements are planned?

Crews will add a third general-purpose lane in each direction along the 11-mile stretch and add an HOV lane in each direction between Loop 202 and Riggs Road. They will also:

  • Rebuild the interchanges at Wild Horse Pass Boulevard, Riggs Road and Queen Creek Road/State Route 347.
  • Build a new interchange at Koli Road, between Wild Horse Pass Boulevard and Queen Creek Road.
  • Put up overhead message boards, freeway cameras, and systems that detect wrong-way drivers.

What about the other parts of the I-10 widening project?

Construction on the first segment began in May 2024 to replace the I-10 bridges over the Gila River, about 11 miles south of Loop 202. Finishing touches on the new bridges are scheduled for next month.

Work on the second segment began in January 2026. It covers 10 miles of I-10 from Gas Line Road to just north of Casa Grande, near the Pinal Avenue/State Route 387 interchange.

Crews are adding a third general-purpose lane in each direction of the second segment, rebuilding the Pinal Avenue interchange and adding a new interchange at Seed Farm Road. They are also widening the Gas Line Road bridge and removing the Dirk Lay Road bridge.

All four segments of the I-10 widening project are expected to be finished by late 2029.
