PHOENIX – A driver was killed in a fiery overnight crash on a freeway ramp south of Chandler, authorities said.

The collision between an SUV and semitruck occurred around 12:30 a.m. Monday on the eastbound Interstate 10 exit ramp at Riggs Road, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The truck driver told DPS he was parked on the right shoulder and sleeping when the SUV struck the big rig from behind.

The SUV caught fire and was engulfed in flames, DPS said. The driver was unable to get out of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The flames spread to the semitruck, which was hauling meat, but the driver was able to separate the cab from the trailer and escaped without injury.

The ramp from eastbound I-10 to Riggs Road was closed while the scene was under investigation. DPS expected the ramp to be cleared by around 7 a.m.
