Driver dead after crashing, exiting vehicle, jumping in front of Phoenix freeway traffic

A driver is dead after he left his vehicle following a collision and was hit by two cars on a Phoenix freeway Thursday morning, authorities said.

The fatal incident occurred about 4:30 a.m. on westbound Interstate 10, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

First, the driver was involved in a two-vehicle collision on the 67th Avenue off-ramp.

“For unknown reasons, this driver exited his vehicle and ran onto the westbound mainline of Interstate 10, where the driver of another vehicle told us he saw the subject intentionally jump in front of his vehicle, despite his heavy breaking,” DPS spokesman Bart Graves told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

The man, whose name has not been released, was then struck by another passing vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both drivers who hit the man remained at the scene and spoke to investigators.

“There was no impairment involved on their part, but we don’t know what was the situation with him (the driver who died),” Graves said.

Multiple lanes of westbound I-10 were closed near 63rd Avenue for several hours during the investigation, creating significant delays during the morning commute.
