EV’s set to lose access to Arizona HOV lanes on Oct. 1

PHOENIX — If there is no change to an incoming federal code, all electric vehicles (EVs) with only a driver will not have access to HOV lanes during restricted hours beginning on Wednesday, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced.

The current code states that EVs or other “alternative fuel or energy efficient” vehicles, regardless of number of occupants, can use Arizona HOV lanes during freeway restricted hours, which go from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.

This proposed federal code would not affect other HOV-lane exempt vehicles such as motorcycles, public transit buses and emergency responder vehicles and tow trucks.

ADOT said if the code does change it will “continue to enforce the state laws and lean on existing traffic enforcement discretion.”

Drivers of EVs or other alternative fuel vehicles can prepare for the change and find other helpful information about vehicle registration online.
