ADOT: Drivers should delay travel ahead of winter storms

PHOENIX — Drivers can expect winter weather conditions throughout northern Arizona this weekend, which is why the Arizona Department of Transportation is urging travelers to adjust their plans.

This week, the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for parts of northern Arizona with 12-20 inches of snow expected to blanket areas above 6,000 feet. The warning is in effect from noon Wednesday through Friday morning.

A low pressure system will bring rain & snow showers late Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday. NWS expects travel to be most dangerous between Thursday night and Friday morning as a larger storm is expected. Areas as low as 4,000 feet could see light snowfall.

Ahead of this, ADOT urged travelers to adjust their plans or, if they plan on traveling in northern Arizona, to be prepared for closures.

Last weekend, winter weather caused road closures on parts of Interstate 40 near Kingman and further west near Williams. The snow and ice caused slide-offs and crashes that caused road closures lasting up to 12 hours.

Drivers should be prepared for similar conditions this week and into the weekend.
