ADOT will start, resume 6 Northern Arizona projects starting March 29

PHOENIX — The historic March heatwave has brought spring weather to Arizona and that means the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) can start or continue highway improvement projects soon.

Projects that were shut down for the winter and new projects focused on paving roads and safety maintenance will get underway starting as early as March 29.

There will be six projects going on this spring.

Interstate 17 in Flagstaff

ADOT will resume working on a $21 million project, installing eight miles of new wildlife fencing along the highway between Kelly Canyon and Munds Park, 12 miles south of Flagstaff. The project is designed to reduce the risk of collisions with wildlife, such as elk and deer, according to ADOT.

Most of the project was completed last fall, and the rest is scheduled for completion this fall. The roadwork will resume in April, and limited lane restrictions are planned.

State Route 87 Improvement Project

This $12.2 million project in Payson is focused on sidewalk, driveway and crosswalk ramps and will resume the week of March 29.

The project also includes pavement resurfacing along five miles of SR 87 between Green Valley Parkway and Crackjack Road, which is expected to begin in May.

The entire project started in August 2025, took a winter break and is expected to be completed in late fall, according to ADOT.

Lane restrictions will mostly only affect drivers overnight Sundays through Thursdays.

State Route 89A Guardrail Project

This Oak Creek Canyon project will replace guardrail and install concrete barriers along the SR 89A switchbacks that carry traffic in and out of the north end of Oak Creek Canyon between Pine Flat Campground and Oak Creek Vista, which is about 13 miles north of Sedona, according to ADOT.

The work will begin in April and is scheduled to be completed in late summer.

Drivers can expect 24-hour lane restrictions and temporary signals at times. When that’s not the case, weekdays lane restrictions may be in place during daylight. ADOT encourages drivers to use I-17 and SR 179 as alternative routes.

Interstate 40 pavement improvements

There will be three different resurfacing projects this spring along I-40, with three resuming work and one beginning from scratch.

Work has resumed between Holy Moses Wash and Rattlesnake Wash (mileposts 47-58) in Kingman. In April, work will resume between Two Guns and Meteor City Road (mileposts 230-240) west of Winslow, and a pavement preservation project will get underway from US 93 east to Silver Springs Road (mileposts 72-80), according to ADOT.

ADOT encourages drivers to slow down and merge safely when approaching work zones, to plan for weekday lane restrictions and allow for extra travel time.

State Rout 64 improvement project

This $19.4 million project will resurface 19 miles of SR 64 between the I-40 interchange and Pipeline Road (mileposts 185-205), according to ADOT. It will add several new left turn lanes and improve turnouts, including driveways.

ADOT said drivers can expect intermittent daytime restrictions Mondays through Thursdays and on Friday mornings. Most of the paving is planned during overnight hours.

The project is scheduled for completion in fall 2027.

US 160 pavement improvement project

This 14-mile US 160 project will improve pavement both in and east of Tuba City (mileposts 321-335).

It is slated to start in April and be completed by this fall.

ADOT said drivers should expect lane closures and traffic shifts as work takes place Mondays through Thursdays.
