Award-winning brewery closing after 9 years in downtown Mesa

PHOENIX – Oro Brewing Company, an award-winning mainstay of the downtown Mesa social scene for nearly a decade, is shutting down.

The brewery and taproom on Main Street east of Country Club Drive will pour its last pints on Jan. 25.

“This has not been the easiest decision to make, especially since we have been such a part of the downtown Mesa community from the time that the only places on the west side of Robson were us and Worth Takeaway, but it is the way we must go,” the business announced on Instagram last week.

The announcement came after the venue added a bodega section and rebranded as Oro Brewing & Vice Company in August 2025 and celebrated its ninth anniversary in October.

What top awards did Oro Brewing Company win?

Oro Brewing earned multiple awards during its run, including a Great American Beer Festival gold medal in the coffee beer category and World Beer Cup silver medal in the fruited wheat beer category in 2022.

It also was named best brewery of 2018 by the Arizona Society of Homebrewers and brewery of the year at the 2022 Arizona Craft Beer Awards.

What will happen to Oro Brewing Company space in Mesa?

The downtown Mesa space will remain in local hands.

“Although our story may be ending, another story will begin. Armando Hernandez, from Tacos Chiwas and other local ventures, will be moving in,” the announcement said.

Hernandez told Phoenix magazine he and Nadia Holguin, his wife and business partner, plan to rename the venue as Mesa Brewing Company.

They aim to reopen the taproom by mid-February or early March and use the microbrewery to supply beer for their restaurants, including Tacos Chiwas, Cocina Chiwas, Espiritu and Main Burgers.
