CRUjiente Tacos staying open in Phoenix at least through May

PHOENIX — CRUjiente Tacos, a modern taqueria in east Phoenix, did not have to close over the weekend after receiving a new lease on life.

The Mexican restaurant at 40th Street and Camelback Road will remain open through the end of May — and possibly longer.

Earlier this month, executive chef Rich Hinojosa said Saturday would be CRUjiente Tacos’ last day.

As the closing date approached, he broke the news Thursday that his restaurant received a temporary reprieve from the property owner and is working to “keep this party going.”

“Along with everything going on at CRU the past week, numerous people have reached out about trying to keep it alive,” he said on social media. “I am thrilled to say, as of a couple hours ago, we are extending our lease until the end of May! This gives a little bit more time as we try to reach an agreement with an investor that wants us to keep CRU in its original location and help grow our brand!”

Last year, Hinojosa’s restaurant received national exposure when it was featured on an episode of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” a popular Food Network show hosted by Guy Fieri.
