Developers break ground on attainable rental housing complex in Tempe

PHOENIX — Construction of a new affordable rental community in Tempe is officially underway. City officials and developers related to the project broke ground on Thursday.

Cabana Kyrene, a community located at 515 W. Guadalupe Road in Tempe, will bring 229 rental housing units at the southwest corner of Guadalupe and Kyrene roads.

The community was developed by Scottsdale-based Greenlight Communities.

There will be 90 studio apartments, 93 one-bedroom apartments and 46 two-bedroom units.

Once construction is completed, these residences will be spread across six three-story buildings.

Amenities include a pool, fitness center and workspaces with Wi-Fi.

Company leaders expect the project to be completed by September 2026.

How will Cabana Kyrene expand Tempe’s affordable housing supply?

Tempe Mayor Corey Woods picked up a shovel for the groundbreaking event.

“In Tempe, over 25,000 households spend more than 30% of their income on housing, which highlights the urgent need for attainable communities like Cabana Kyrene,” Woods said in a Friday news release.

He said Kyrene Cabana will help community members grow and thrive.

“This is the first workforce-focused attainable housing development in south Tempe in over 15 years,” Woods said. “It fills a critical gap for teachers, service workers, healthcare professionals, and so many others who are the backbone of our city.”
