Tempe voters filling 2 City Council seats in runoff election this week

Two Tempe City Council seats will be filled in a runoff election Tuesday.

All eligible voters were sent mail ballots last month. It’s too late to return them by mail, however, because they must be received by 7 p.m. on Election Day to count.

The following three sites will be open for in-person voting Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.:

• El Tianguis Mercado, 9201 S. Avenida del Yaqui, Guadalupe
• Tempe History Museum, 809 E. Southern Ave., Tempe
• Fort McDowell Recreation Center, 16402 N. Fort McDowell Road, Scottsdale

Tempe voters who still have their mail ballots can submit them by the deadline at one of these drop box sites:

• Tempe City Hall, 31 E. Fifth St., Tempe
• Maricopa County Tabulation and Election Center, 510 S. Third Ave., Phoenix
• Maricopa County Elections Mesa, 222 E. Javelina Ave., Mesa

Who qualified for Tempe City Council runoff election?

Tempe had seven candidates for three seats on the ballot for the March 10 primary. Councilmember Arlene Chin was the only candidate to earn enough votes during the primary to clinch a seat.

Two other current councilmembers — Jennifer Adams and Berdetta Hodge – advanced to the runoff along with challengers Bobby Nichols and Brooke St. George.

St. George finished second in the primary behind Chin, followed, in order, by Hodge, Nichols and Adams.

The top two vote-getters in the runoff will be sworn in along with Chin at the July 1 Tempe City Council regular meeting.

Voters in neighboring Guadalupe will also wrap up an election Tuesday. They are being asked to authorize a new property tax.
