Maricopa County Attorney’s Office identifies potential non-citizens in voter citizenship probe

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell provided an update Thursday on her office’s investigation into the citizenship and voter eligibility of 207 people referred by the county recorder earlier this year.

The Maricopa County Recorder’s Office sent the 207 names to Mitchell’s office in March, but it noted that only 60 of them cast ballots.

“We focused initially on the 60 who voted. We are working our way through that,” Mitchell told reporters during a news conference. “We are finding that there are citizens. Not all of them, but yes, some of them.”

The county attorney added that she will be releasing the results of the probe into those 60 people once she resolves some unanswered questions.

The voters were also referred to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, but Mitchell explained the two offices are not partnering on the investigation.

“What we have done is we took the 60 people who actually voted, and then … the non-voting people who were registered came off of two separate lists. We took one list, they took the other,” Mitchell said. “So, obviously we’ve coordinated to the extent that we’ve discussed … who’s going to handle what, but no we’re not coordinating our investigation.”
