Former Republican Mesa Mayor John Giles endorses Katie Hobbs for governor

Former Mesa Mayor John Giles recently announced his endorsement of Gov. Katie Hobbs for re-election as the state’s highest ranking official.

Giles identified himself as a lifelong Republican, but cited the Democratic governor’s bipartisan work as his reason for backing her.

“She’s demonstrated that real leadership is about working across the aisle, bringing people together and delivering results, whether it’s cutting taxes, lowering costs or securing the border,” Giles said in a video posted to Hobbs’ YouTube. “She will always put Arizona over partisan politics.”

In the video, the former mayor also denounces U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs, one of the Republican candidates running for governor, as being part of the problem.

“He’s too focused on hyperpartisan politics instead of delivering for Arizona,” Giles emphasized.

John Giles received national spotlight for supporting Kamala Harris in 2024

Giles previously endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 election, citing her personality and policy as to why she was the superior candidate. He also spoke in support of her during the Democratic National Convention.

In response, Hobbs expressed her gratitude for the endorsement and highlighted Giles as someone who puts Arizonans and results before his party.

“Together, we’ve shown that Arizona doesn’t have to choose between Republican or Democrat — we can choose to solve problems,” Hobbs said in a news release.

During her time in office, the governor claims to have signed more than 800 pieces of bipartisan legislation into law as well as negotiated four bipartisan budgets, including a $18.29 billion she signed last month that included what she called the largest tax cut for working families.
