Here’s what you need to know about this week’s Arizona CD7 primary debates

PHOENIX – Candidates for the Arizona congressional seat left open by the death of longtime Democratic Rep. Raúl Grijalva will face off in debates this week.

Republicans will make their arguments to 7th Congressional District voters on Monday, and Democrats will take the stage in Tucson the next day.

The Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission is hosting the debates, which are scheduled to run from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

KTAR News will stream live broadcasts of the debates on its YouTube channel and air playbacks on 92.3 FM and the station’s audio streams at 7 p.m.

Steve Goldstein and Nohelani Graf will serve as co-moderators both nights. Members of the public can submit potential questions through the Clean Elections website.

Who is participating in CD7 debates?

Three Republican hopefuls are scheduled to participate in Monday’s debate: Daniel Francis Butierez Sr., Jimmy Rodriguez and Jorge Rivas.

The Democratic debate will be more crowded, with five candidates: Adelita Grijalva, Daniel Hernandez, Deja Foxx, Jose Malvido Jr. and Patrick Harris Sr.

Adelita Grijalva is trying to keep the CD7 seat in the family. Her father, who died on March 13 at age 77 from complications with his cancer treatment, served southern Arizona in the U.S. House for more than 20 years.

The primary for the special election to complete the term, which runs through 2026, is set for July 15. The general election in the heavily Democratic district will be held Sept. 23.

A Clean Elections general election debate is scheduled for Aug. 26.
