Democrat Amish Shah emphasized that if elected he would prioritize the public and find ways to work the Trump administration, despite disagreeing with it on a lot.

Shah made the comments to reporters after his debate Wednesday night against Republican Jay Feely for Congressional District 1.

“I don’t agree with them on a lot. I don’t agree with how they’ve conducted themselves. I don’t agree with the violations of the United States Constitution. I don’t agree with … the way that this war is running, the tariffs, the One Big Beautiful Bill, so much of this,” Shah said. “However, you still have to find ways of working for the American people. This is the job that we’re doing here today.”

He added that if that means fighting the administration on one hand and then working to find a bipartisan solution, that’s what he’ll do.

Amish Shah admits having Republican parents has taught him a lot

Shah explained that he’s learned a lot from his parents being on the other side of the aisle from him.

“We have learned that we have to listen to each other and understand each other,” he said. “And sometimes you have those disagreements [and] you may not totally understand, but you work at it and you can really hear people’s hearts. You can hear their fears, you can hear their desires for how life should be.”

He added that he views having those experiences with his parents as advantage when it comes to talking to people who are “very right of center” or “MAGA.”

“I know that so many are coming from such a good place like my parents are coming from,” Shah said. “They want to see a prosperous America and they want to see good things for everybody.”
