Trump’s border czar scheduled to address joint session of Arizona Legislature

PHOENIX – President Donald Trump’s border czar is set to address a joint session of the Arizona Legislature this week, officials announced Monday.

Tom Homan is scheduled to speak in the House chamber of the state Capitol in Phoenix at noon Tuesday at the invitation of House Speaker Steve Montenegro.

The address will be livestreamed on the Arizona Legislature website.

Homan is expected to focus on current border challenges, federal-state cooperation and moving on from the previous administration’s policies.

Who is Border Czar Tom Homan?

Homan is a former Border Patrol agent who worked his way up to head Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2017 and 2018 as the acting director during Trump’s first term.

His current role includes oversight of deportation efforts.

“His firsthand experience and no-nonsense leadership are exactly what our members need as we advance our majority plan to promote public safety, preserve the American dream and protect the rights and liberties of every Arizonan,” Montenegro said in a press release.

Arizona Democrats were less enthusiastic about Homan.

“Homan’s ICE is flailing, incompetent and illegally deporting people who are lawfully present in the United States,” House Democratic Leader Oscar De Los Santos said in a statement. “Democrats like Gov. Hobbs are the ones who are serious on border security and public safety with the SAFE Initiative that has taken more than 6 million fentanyl pills off the streets.”
