ZZ Top bringing 50th anniversary tour to Phoenix this summer

PHOENIX – Get out those cheap sunglasses.

ZZ Top, that little ol’ band from Texas, is heading out on a 50th anniversary tour that will stop in Phoenix this summer.

The legendary blues-rock trio will perform at Comerica Theatre on Aug. 29, with fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Cheap Trick opening the show.

Tickets were scheduled to go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday.

ZZ Top formed in 1969 with Billy Gibbons on guitar, Dusty Hill on bass and Frank Beard, ironically the group’s only member without sprawling facial hair, on drums.

Since then, the band has sold more than 30 million records and generated a string of classic rock radio staples, including “La Grange,” “Legs,” “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Cheap Sunglasses.”

“We’re truly excited to be appearing across the continent this summer and fall, playing our bluesy kind of rock like we started in ’69,” Gibbons said on the band’s website.

“The beards, Frank’s excepted, are perhaps a bit longer, yet nothing else has changed. We’re keeping it that way.”

The North American tour kicks off Aug. 16 in Ridgefield, Washington, and wraps up Oct. 20 in West Palm Beach, Florida.
